Official News On Pens' New Threads

Damn, there's really too much going on today. I nearly forgot to post this nugget. Mike sent in a link to a question-and-answer session featured on the Pittsburgh Penguins' official web site.

The column was written by Bob Grove who's apparently a regular writer on the site. He didn't give a specific date, although we have heard September 5 will see the unveiling. The Pens are not changing their logo — but we already knew that — and will only see "slight modifications" to the jersey. Read it verbatim here.

QUESTION: I just wanted to know if the Penguins are keeping the jersey and logo the same or are they going to make changes like some of the other teams who have already released their uniform designs?
-Matthew in Butler

BOB GROVE: The mail just continues to stream in about the Penguins' new Reebok Edge uniforms. Look for the Penguins to unveil the new uniforms prior to the start of camp. But to reiterate: no new logo. There are no major changes to the uniforms, no changes requested by the team. The slight modifications to the uniforms will be the same as those made to the uniforms of every team. While some other NHL teams (including Washington, San Jose and Ottawa) are making logo changes, the Penguins are not.

If you're totally lost on this subject, catch up here (to see the post about the unveiling date) and here (to see the potential new uniforms).

Where did you get the date for the coyotes unveiling?

Well this post is about the Penguins. But Phoenix Coyotes season ticket holders received an email that read as follows:

COYOTESFEST
SAT. SEPT. 15 ~ 11AM-4PM
Mark your calendars! CoyotesFest is just a few weeks away and is your first chance to meet all of your 2007-08 Coyotes players and get the first look at the new RBK Edge Uniform System!

And that is why I posted the date in the sidebar countdown.

I'm not expecting much of the new jersey. All that I want is something very similar to the jerseys used last season. If they do it, I'll be happy.

I loved the Vegas gold when they unveiled it, but the honeymoon is over. They need to bring back the old yellow right now.

I'm still holding onto the hope that they'll surprise everyone by reverting back to it (I saw a really awesome prototype a long time ago with a "metallic yellow" that looked amazing, but I can't find it anywhere), but I'm not holding my breath.

It's really not that big of a deal - I just really hope that we don't go with that cookie-cutter trash template that the previous "leaks" showed. The last thing I want to do is see my previous team hit the ice wearing fucking Senators rip-offs.

Darn. Keeping the silly penguin-holding-a-hockey-stick logo = BOO! Bring back the Penguitriangle.

anon, you are crazy. the futurepigeon was ugly.

It was smart and simple. What they have now looks downright childish. You're either supposed to have a logo that can fall behind an iconic classic look (Original 6 teams, Calgary, Ottawa's original logo), or give that strike-fear-into-the-heart sort of angle (Nashville, Florida). Futurepenguin at least made a stab at the former; Stickhandling penguin looks about as threatening as a daddy-long-legs found in a basement bathroom quickly wiped away with a kleenex. Much like the first round of the playoffs. BA-ZING!

wait, the future penguin had a stab at the iconic look? wow. you are wickedly off base. if anything, the old-school skating penguins is more representational of 'tradition' more so than the futurepigeon.

I mean more in the simple-and instantly recognizable sense. The current Leafs logo isn't exactly the most technically detailed or photorealistic logo but it has a simplistic, partially abstracted style that makes it unmistakable and, above all, timeless. Much like what the former Penguins logo was trying to pull off with the triangular shape. Not as effective as some other logos out there but it was still at least thinking in the right direction. This logo they're reusing now just looks awkward, even laughable. Seeing some waddling waterfowl trying to do human things with its wings isn't sleek, stylish, or particularly clever. It's only old-school in the sense that it looks incredibly dated. I keep thinking of some animated black-and-white PSA from the 50s whenever I look at the thing. Yes, it looks so archaic that it echoes a time before the Penguins even existed.

how is the maple leafs logo even remotely, let alone partially abstract? the dated future pigeon is a product of a desperate franchise in need of turning a quick buck in the 90's--theres nothing nostalgic or unmistakable about that.

in regards to its laughability in terms of feasibility with the world of hockey, i think you are misguided. the penguin, who is more native to the ice than anything else in the NHL, doesn't seem like it fits to you? i wish there were more logos that more appropriately connected to 'ICE' and/or the cold/arctic. why not capitalize on an intricacy to the sport like ice or things relating to it. The penguin, in its most base form, is the most representational logo of an ice related sport that could ever possibly be. if you dont get that, im sorry. The dated triangle pigeon had a boring design and even worse jerseys.

The Pens logo of the 90's was horrible, most fans hated it. The skating penguin with the golden triangle have been part of the logo since the inception of the team in 1967-68. And in 1968-71 the current pens logo, with the original gold, was used within the circular name of the team. So saying that the current logo isn't iconic is blastphamy. Add in that the Pens won back to back cups before the unveiling of the 90's logo. The logo of the 90's only reminds us of how terrible the team was during those years, and the current logo reminds fans of the Stanly Cup years.
