The Rest Of The Worst

Just wanted to point out that you can now see Part Two of the NHLToL Quest For The Worst video at the top of the page.

That's right, it's going to be the biggest tournament yet with 32 logos involved! I hope to have the bracket up along with the first poll by Friday or Saturday at the latest (sorry, it's a lot to organize).

A quick note about how I came to use these 32 logos in the tournament just so everyone's clear. Basically, I scoured through all of the comments left in the nomination post from back on December 21. I tallied up every nomination and developed a pool based on which logos got the most nominations.

I didn't choose the logos myself. I really wanted to make this a very democratic process. You guys are going to be voting, so it was up to you to decide which logos would be involved in the first place.

As far as how the bracket will be set up, just know that this one will not be random. I went through and meticulously matched up logos for this first round in a way that just felt natural. At its core is similarity. For instance, the two stink-in-rink Canucks logos are paired up in Round One. You'll see the rest of the match-ups when I post the bracket. Then you'll start voting on which logo is the worst!

Meantime, if you have any questions, I will absolutely answer them. Leave them in the comments area and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

By the way, you can still see the original video by clicking here.

UPDATE (1/10 2:26 AM): There was a very good question posed in the comments that I wanted to answer here.

I dont get it, the Canucks' stick in the rink is in the worst logo pool, yet it finished 2nd in the last tournament.

In fact, the stick-in-rink logo used now is very different from the one used in the 1970s. (Look at them side-by-side if you don't believe me.) Part of the criteria for logos in this tournament was that they could not have made it past the first round of any previous tournament they had already been a part of. Otherwise that would've meant there was at least one logo you guys thought it was better than — obviously meaning it wasn't the worst. (Did you follow that?)

The 1970s stick logo lost to the Whalers in the first round of the Vintage Tournament if you recall.

Initially, my plan was to make this tournament out of all the logos that were defeated in the first round of the previous tournaments. But ultimately I opted against that to let you guys make nominations.

By the way, I don't think this question was asked yet, but in case it comes up, I thought I'd address it. The Mighty Ducks third jersey and the Canucks' yellow V jersey both have pseudo-logos featured in this tournament. While these may not entirely be considered logos in the general sense, I made them part of the competition because of the large number of nominations they earned.

Hope that explains everything. Again, feel free to ask questions if you've got them.

That's strange. Make sure your Flash player is up to date. Otherwise, all I can suggest is try closing out of your browser and reloading the page.

Let me know if anyone else has trouble with it. It's working fine for me. If you need it, here's a direct link to the video.

Honestly, let's just hand Buffalo the "win" now. And make sure you forward the results to Tom "absentee landlord" Golisano and Larry "run outta town once before" Quinn.

I totally agree with you Drew.

the rangers primary is in this???? are you kidding me
if they make it past the first round of voting it will be a travesty

LETS GO RANGERS
...potvin sucks!!!

Good to see 4 Canucks logos are represented here. But a concern is why are the two stick-in-rinks paired up together? The 4 Canucks logos should be put in 4 different pools, so there is a chance they could be the final four. Or, it could just be random. Just my $0.02.

So glad to see that the Mooturus made the tournament. Great video! Lets get this thing going!

it seems like every canuck logo is in that

I Agree With All The Chosen Logos Except the Stick-In-Rink and the Fact that the Predators Skull isn't Included.
I Think These Should Be the Match-Ups. Mostly Region Locked Match-Ups So the Teams Crown A Worst Logo To Represent Them Later Into the Tournament.

1st Pool

1. Primary Stick in Rink
Vs Secondary Stick In Rink

2. Fire Horse
Vs Oiler

3. Mighty Ducks
Vs Wild Wing

4. Angry King
Vs Kings Crown

5. Mooterus
Vs Dallas Stars

6. Pheonix Coyote
Vs Big Foot

7. Golden Seals
Vs Chiefs

8. Blues Trumpet
Vs Anahiem Ducks

2nd Pool

9. Flying Skate
Vs Flying V

10. BuffaSlug
Vs. Buffalo Head

11. Predators Alternate
Vs. Gaylord Entertainment

12. Blue Jackets
Vs. Yellow Jacket

13. Puckey
Vs. Hurricane

14. Fisherman's Friend
Vs. Rangers Shield

15. 1970s Bruin Head
Vs. 2000s Bruin Head

16. Penguins
Vs. Lightning

Oh, BTW I'm Kind of Surprised Nobody Nominated the Canucks Orca. Guess that's Vancouver's Best Logo, To Non-Vancouver Fans. If it weren't for the Non-Canuck Fans, the Stick-In Rink Wouldn't Even Be In This, The Orca Would.

Rangers' logo has no business in this tournament.

it is absolutely asinine that the oilers old shoulder patch is in this competition...why dont you put it in a bracket with new york's logo so one of them can leave gracefully

canucklehead said...

Ok, hold on a sec. The original stick-n-rink logo is in there twice? Simply because it's has a different colour scheme? That's cheap IMO.

And I have no problem having four Canuck logos in there, but the fact that the birthing whale isn't included anywhere is just wrong.

Can't wait for this to get started!

Wow... who voted for the Rangers logo? That's like the most classic logo in the league.

Also, I have to say... as bad as the Canucks' logo history is, I think the tournament is piling on a bit. The "V" wasn't really a logo - just a striping pattern. And having both stick-in-rink logos seems kind of unfair when they're essentially the same logo.

But when the Canucks logos were pitted against each other, the stick-in-rink won by a huge margin over the flying skate and birthing whale. So you put the vintage logo in, not once but twice, over a logo that was already judged to be worse? By your logic it shouldn't qualify.

It makes me wonder if the piling on wouldn't have happened if the stick-in-rink didn't do so well in the secondary logo tourney.

Great tournament idea.

Mmm, when I look at some logos, the secondary Boston is pretty ugly. It looks like a bad panther with blood on the mouth.

Also, that ugly/stupid Pucky should be hight on winning.

I totally agreed that Rangers logo have nothing to do in that contest. Put it against the slug/Anaheim/Pucky for a pass.

I also don't get why the striping pattern of tha canucks is in there. If it's the case, why not the techtonic plates of the Flames? These ones were terrible.

Anyway, great tournament. Just don't forget that boston logo, because it sucked hard

Unknown said...

how that ugly stick and rink (1st gen) made is so far in the last tourny i'll never know. Can't wait for this one to start.

This is because the V was the only thing on those jerseys, there was no logo; contrary to the Flames' where these also was a logo involved. Am I correct Chris?

Close, but actually the black and red ("flying skate") logo was featured prominently on the shoulders of those jerseys despite the fact that it was the primary. Aside from the fact that a number of people nominated it, I felt like the "V" could be considered a secondary "logo" from those years. I feel like they aren't mere stripes if you see what I'm saying.

Thanks for the comments, everybody.

Actually, you make an excellent point. I'm sure that's little consolation but I was really only considering actual tournaments. Despite the fact that your logic works, the pool won't be changing. But I appreciate the comment.

why are the canes up there their logo makes sense and actually looks like a professional logo.

Unknown said...

It always depends what you think is worst.

You could look as a good looking logo but the logo don't match with the team or the city. Take the New York Islanders Captain fishstick. It is not a bad logo. It is pretty and well done but because it looks too much like Captain Highliner Fish product it became an instant joke on the canadian side of the border!

Other look too cartoony for the taste of the purist like Anahein Mighty Ducks.

Other just look too plain like New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver stick-in-rink

Other are look just too amateur like Ottawa in letters with the peace tower and Pucky the Whale or the Colombus Blue Jacket Star Ribbon doing the CBJ or anything with the name of the city.

Others are weird looking like The Seals or Picasso Coyote or the hurricanes vortex or the buffaslugs.

Ryan Faith said...

For people posting the comments about the logos involved, give it a rest. You are the ones who should have nominated other logos, and this isnt easy organize, give him a break. If it isnt the worst in your opinion than dont vote for them, easy as that.

And to Chris thanks for the explanation about the Canucks logo. I dont see ALOT of differences but I guess the changes make people happy.

Canucklehead and Curtle are spot on. The corporate birthing Orca should be on the list without question. The Stick 'n Rink C and the Skate said "Canucks" and they both said hockey. The main problem was that the club has not won the Cup. The Orca looks like Grover from Sesame Street demonstrating heavy and light.

Totally Not Ryan Krasman said...

The Orca is the best logo if the canucks win the cup with it :P

4 canucks logos, no oilers wordmark. It says oilers in big ugly letters. Thats the WHOLE primary.

Unknown said...

Love that bass line

Whiter Mage said...

The Rangers logo indeed deserves to be on this list. Nothing about it screams hockey. At least the Caps word mark has a stick, puck, and some stars on it, and a subliminal net.

also i would pick you for some type of award show for the nominations i like the way the vid works. Obviously you have done this before(i dont mean first one)

Hi Chris,

This is the first time I actually have a complaint about one of your tourneys.

The canucks V is absolutely NOT a logo. The primary logo during that time period was the skate logo. It was worn on the shoulders instead of the front of the jersey. If this was a jersey tourney that V jersey could easily win as the worst. You really need to swap the V for the orca. Even in the canucks history tournament the orca lost out to the stick in rink yet it is not here yet the stick in rink is? Doesn't make sense.

Sorry to complain, I know you put a lot of work into these tourneys. I don't expect you will change this, but I think you SHOULD. I will still happily vote for anything but the V if you go on.

Cheers

Ooooooooh I beg to differ....

stupid NFL

i meant to say the Bruins not the Bears

Also i think there isnt enough Vancouver on this thing what about the 2 orcas they should be on this thing to.

My idea for the next tournament
"Quest for the Worst:Canucks Edition"

The Kyle said...

Aw come on, you guys are just picking on the Canucks now. The only logo that deserves to be here is that skate logo. The stick n' rink isn't even as simple as the habs logo but somehow the Canadiens escape because people say "Oo it's sooo classic." The Canucks logo has been around since the seventies, that's pretty of old. And that V logo wasn't even a logo, the was a logo on the shoulders. That's like having a logo that says DALLAS with a number under it. It's the same situation, both are jerseys that only have a logo on the shoulder.

Daniel said...

Well, just for the record, I think the Canadiens' logo is awful. They've got a letter for the country and a letter for the sport. It would be like a baseball team whose logo was a big "U" (for "United States") with a "B" (for "baseball") inside it.
