40 Years Of Penguins
When the Pittsburgh Penguins announced they'd be unveiling their Rbk EDGE uniforms, they said the sweaters would feature a special shoulder patch. Many, myself included, speculated on a commemoration of the Pens' 40th year in Pittsburgh. In fact, what the team really had in mind was a much bigger number — a commemoration of Pittsburgh's 250th year as a city.
The patch has been "coined" the 250-cent piece in some circles. (Couldn't resist it.) But regarding that whole 40th anniversary thing, the Pens are celebrating this year their entry into the league along with the Kings, Stars, Flyers and Blues. So one fan came up with a concept logo.
It definitely feels like one of those old '90s commemorative patches, but hey, no one else seems to have come up with one. (Pens fans, correct me if I'm ignorant. Does the team have a 40th anniversary logo for marketing crap and such?)
Anyway, feel free to post your thoughts. We'd love to hear what you think. And if you have an idea for a 40th anniversary logo for the Pens or any of the other 1967 expansion clubs (hell, you could even do the Cleveland Barons/Oakland Seals if you wanted), feel free to send it along and I may even post it here on the blog.

They actually had a fairly sharp 30th anniversary logo, which I got on a t-shirt for applying for a Pens credit card at the Igloo years ago. It was a big "30" w/ the triangle logo and two small Stanley Cups incorporated into the design. I still have the shirt...I'll try to post a scan sometime soon.
Oh wait, here it is:

Yeah, they need one for 40...that "250" just ain't cuttin' it!
I guess because of the lost season due to the lockout it really is not considered their 40th season but their 39th. Maybe next year they will have a 40th season patch.
For the record, the Flyers and Blues had their 40th anniversaries last year, because last season was actually the 40th season of existence for those 1967 teams. Either the Penguins miscounted, or because of the lockout, they're going by the number of seasons, not the number years.
The Redskins have the same problem; they're calling this year their 75th anniversary, even though they joined the NFL the year before the Eagles and Steelers, who are (accurately) celebrating their 75th anniversaries this year.
The Kings also had their 40th anniversary last year.

That was the case last year. because of the lockout, this year is the 40th season and last year their 39th. if not for that, last year would be their 40th season and this year their 41st. the Coyotes also pushed their 10th anniversary a year back. they had it last year instead of the year before, even though they moved to Phoenix in 96-97.
