Lightning Unveiling Video

This video was posted in the comments of today's earlier post. It shows the big unveiling of the Lightning's new jerseys.

The Lightning players you see modeling the home black jerseys are Chris Gratton (#77), Filip Kuba (#71), Johan Holmqvist (#40) and Marty St. Louis (#26). Those donning in the white road sweaters are local TV personalities.

Wearing #8 is NewsChannel 8's Jennifer Leigh. In #9 is Bay News 9 anchor Jen Holloway. Tampa Bay's 10 sports anchor Justin Allen is donning #10. FOX 13 news anchor Kelly Ring is wearing #13. And #28 is being worn by ABC Action News anchor Brendan McLaughlin — in case you were wondering.

Man, I wish I could've been there.

I've seen worse, but I'm definitely not a fan of these new sweaters (even less of the aways). They kinda remind me of the new Sens uni's. I really wish they would have used blue for the jerseys instead of black. And what's up with the numbers on front....the more and more I see that, the more and more I dislike it. I do like the more updated logo though. Subtle change, but definitely cool.

Sadly, my beloved Stars are rumored to be sporting numbers up front on their sweaters as well. I guess I'll just have to sport my now vintage Stars jersey...

I shouldn't be speaking for Chris, but that is what he means. If you want to ask him that, Email him.

In the future, you can email me at nhllogos@gmail.com.

As far as creating concept jerseys, you'll need some sort of image manipulation software. Adobe Photoshop is at the high end of the spectrum — used mostly by design and photography professionals and people with lots of extra money they don't know what to do with.

If you're not filthy rich, there is plenty of other software out there. Personally, I use Photoshop and a program called Paint Shop Pro which isn't terribly expensive. Look around on the web and see if you find something that works for you.

At the most basic level, if you have Windows, you have a built-in program called Paint found in your Accessories menu. You can download the blank template from this site and give that a try.

As far as designing concepts, it would be helpful to have some graphic design background or know-how.

And if you don't mind me asking, what's your fascination with Las Vegas? Are you from there? Or are you just interested in further NHL expansion? I've heard several cities will likely vie for a franchise if the NHL expands again: Vegas, Kansas City, Seattle and Hamilton included.

Thanks for reading the blog and good luck with your concept designs!

Looks like the home Whites have the number on the front.

It is odd to have front numbers one the white an not black. But the numbers don't bother me at all. I like them.
And the NHL is NOT returning to white at home.

Could have been worse, but I agree with most that the secondary logo (with the Florida outline behind the bolt) would look best as the primary. The wordmark is completely unnecessary, and clutters the otherwise clean look of the logo. I wish the home blacks would have completely done away with white... that they incorporated more blue into the sweater is a big plus. Black and blue is a very intimidating combo, the white shoulder yoke seemed to make them look monochromatic in the past. The road whites look real good, and I don't mind the numbering on the front at all. In all, not bad, but nothing special.

As far as complaints about RBK go, the only major problem I have is the curved hem at the bottom of the sweater. This makes horizontal striping look awkward (see Detroit) in that spot and is probably a big reason why many teams are omitting that altogether from the new designs. In the end, though, it's up to the teams how they use the RBK template. I'm so happy to be a fan of a classy organization like Detroit who understands the importance of history, and realizes that less is more. I doubt we'll see the Original 6 teams (other than Toronto) make any major changes. The Bruins hit a home run.

Chris, love the site, I use it to keep up with all the new jersey unveilings, and the concept art is fun. Go Wings.

#13 isn't Chris Field, it's Kelly Ring.

I stand corrected. It's hard to tell from that video. Thanks!

I was there from 10am to 2:30pm. The unveiling was cool. I think they shot fireworks towards the guys holding the over-sized sweater. I couldn't tell. When the unveiling was over I had to run back to the front of the line for Marc Denis' autograph (someone was holding my spot). The only reason I was 3 in line was because I was in line for Andreychuk and he had to leave with only 8 people in front on me. He did stay 15 minutes longer than he was scheduled for. St.Louis' line was way too long. My attempts for Holmqvist and Prospals' autograph failed as well due to time. So the only autograph I got was Denis'. I had fun. Dollar hot dogs, 50% of all items with the old logo and the Lightning Girls were there. WOW!. I got around 40 pictures. Oh, did you notice the over-sized sweater had St.Louis' number.

Sounds like it was awesome, William! If you wouldn't mind sending them, I'd like to see some of the pictures you got at the event. I may even be able to post them here if you'd like. You can email them to nhllogos@gmail.com. Thanks!

To the first post, I agree with every single word said by josh. Even the stars part, I am also a stars fan and i absolutly hate the numbers on the front. I like the tampa home ones, but hate the aways.

Okay, I'm not sure why teams insist on placing numbers on their upper right chests. Where would the Stanley Cup patch go if they make it to the finals?

I think teams should start doing what the Columbia Inferno of the ECHL did last year and put their number below their logo: http://columbiainferno.com.ismmedia.com/ISM3/thumbcache/4437f122a3f8d151166b656727438ef5.400x400.jpg

I'm of the opinion the Lightning took a good thing, and made it look like a kid drew it. The sleeve thing is nice. However, if you guys as Bolts fans like it, that's what matters. It doesn't matter what John Q. Caps fan like me thinks of it, it's not marketed for me.

Just like the Senators in everyway, your basic minimalistic design only with different colours, both however were improvements over the old jerseys.

I was surprised to see positive comments on other blogs in regards to the new Panther's and Islander's uniforms, I personally think they are too over the top. I guess I'm old school.

As a Leaf's fan I'm NOT looking forward to an Rbk style uniform, although some reports say the logo is the only part that will be enhanced.

Back to this thread though, I'll give it a thumbs up but am afraid that there will be another two or three teams with the identical design to come.
