Blue Jackets Jerseys Unveiled!

And here it is. No real shock. It's what we expected. Just wanted to post it in photographic form. The draft is going on now. We'll get to see some more new uniforms I'm betting.

UPDATE (7/21 6:43 AM): I just realized I had some better images of the new Blue Jackets uniforms which were unveiled in Columbus on draft day. Thought I'd post them in case you hadn't seen them yet.

They look sharp and this new logo is far better than what they have been wearing. Incidentally, as a funny side note, I recently read on a message board somewhere someone calling the shoulder logo a "rebel hat." Clearly this person is out of touch with American history since those of us who aren't know that the "blue jackets" were the Union soldiers. I got a chuckle out of it.

You can't really see it well in the photos, so for a better look at the logo I'm referring to, check it.

Why all this patriotism in a logo. Aren't there enough American flags around?

Probably, but that's the flag of Ohio. I think it works well for a team from Ohio's state capital. Thanks for commenting!

The BJ's should just change their name to the Americans.

Nice jerseys but they are a little bit too Team USA.

Pretty sure that the BJ's were named after Columbus businessmen... not the Union soldiers...

The Civil War came no where near Ohio... it was all VA, PA, and MD.

That aside, I love the new unis!

They are called the bluejackets because the uniforms for the union soldiers were made in Columbus

They are also called the Blue Jackets because Ohio had the most soldiers enlisted in the Civil War of any of the Union States. The Ohio Flag on the jersey is wrapped around the star to form a "C" for Columbus. The star on the uniform represents that Columbus is the capitol of Ohio. The shoulder patches on the sweater are of a Union soldiers hat. Maybe people need to read a little more and not count on looking at jerseys to get the whole concept of what the team is about. If you want a jersey to tell the whole story than please tell me what The Canadiens and Bruins history is all about by looking at the jersey.

Not impressed, on several levels.

First, the new logo looks like a minor league team logo.

They used contrasting sleeve bars on the white jersey, why not on the blue?

The horizontal pinstripes on the bottom/waist of the jersey are too thin, too weak. A bold, contrasting horizontal stripe would be much more effective.

see i dont get the logo i mean what does that have to do with a blue jacket?

not sure what the Bruins are about entirely, but the Canadiens (les Canadiens) were the colonists in the St. Lawrence region of New France (called "Canada" at the time-the name referred to a few more places until 1867, when we got our present name). The were also known as "les Habitants", hence the small H within the C of the Canadiens' (also, of course, known as "the Habs") logo.

Matthew, I still don't exactly know why we came to call our team "the habs", but for sure it does not refer to the little "H" within the "C" logo. In fact, the logo for Les Canadiens is nothing more than a stylized CH for Club de Hockey Canadien (Canadian hockey club). You know, like in these old soccer leagues: ex. Liverpool FC (for Liverpool Football Club). And, really, I would like the Canadiens to use more the Montreal HC form. Back to the basics, far away from the real-real-frightening-killers-beasts team names and logos from today's clubs!

most likly they are trying to get some fans by using the american flag theme,

Excellant logo and color scheme. Those who are familar with the great state of Ohio recognize the state flag in the logo and appreciate the star for Columbus(state capital). As for the name Bluejackets... it is history based. Do many other teams in the NHL really have names that make sense? Kings in LA, Rangers in NY, Penguins in Pitt? The Flyers and Leafs aren't even spelled right! As for Montreal, not many years ago the people of Quebec didn't even want to Canadian!

If they didn't want to be Canadian, why did they vote 'no' for a referendum to seperate? Twice?

None of Columbus' jerseys have looked particularly great. The bug, the CB, this star-spangled monstrosity. I think the only solution would be to replace Columbus with Winnipeg to keep the Central division filled.

If you have ever travelled through Ohio, you'll see the stars and stripes everywhere. It seems to be part of their state culture. I don't have a problem with it.

Let's get a few things straight here. First of all, it doesn't hurt to re-emphasize that the flag is NOT an American flag, it is an Ohio flag. So if you think this is all meant to be faddish patriotism, you're simply wrong. Ohio sent the most soldiers of any state on the Union side of the Civil War, and Union soldiers wore blue (Confederate soldiers wore gray), hence the name. It's all quite pertinent and relevant.

Now, to clarify and answer about the Canadiens and Bruins, first of all, the "H" in the Canadiens logo does NOT stand for "Habitants", it stands for "hockey", as in the offical name of the team: Club de Hockey Canadien. If you disagree, contact the team and they'll tell you the same thing. "Habitants" has nothing to do with it.

As for the Bruins, their logo obviously puts the "B" (which stands for "Boston", not "Bruins") at the hub of a spoked wheel. One of Boston's oldest unofficial nicknames (to go along with "Beantown"), is "The Hub of the Universe", or "The Hub" for short.

Any questions?

Interesting side note for the person who said most teams don't have any history to their names... just because you don't personally know the history, doesn't mean it isn't there.

The New York Rangers actually have a very interesting history to their name...

In 1925, the New York Americans joined the National Hockey League, playing in Madison Square Garden. The Amerks proved to be an even greater success than expected, leading Garden president Tex Rickard to go after a team for the Garden despite promising the Amerks that they would be the only hockey team to play there.

Rickard was granted a franchise, which he originally planned to name the New York Giants. However, the New York press soon nicknamed his team "Tex's Rangers", and the new name stuck.
