Sad Day

This is a very sad day for me. Two of my favorite Lightning players play for other teams now. I knew this year's trade deadline was going to suck, but I didn't know how much. In case you haven't heard, Vinny Prospal is a Flyer and Brad Richards — I can barely admit it to myself — is going to Dallas. Makes me regret giving you Stars fan an entire post last night. I'm going to go curl up in a dark room now.

If it makes you feel any better, Richards was old. I guess? Maybe? Nah, I got nothing. Go Sabres :P

At least you didn't trade Bryce Salvador for a goon. That makes me shake my head and wonder and admit that my Blues (so far) have made the bonehead move of the day.

I feel your pain. The Smyth trade last year felt horrible - I was upset for months. At least the Richards move was expected.

does anyone share my sentiments that Montreal trading Huet was the stupidest deal at the deadline?
I cant be the only one to think that

I LOVE CAMPBELL

Losing Richards and Prospal has to hurt but your team has cap room now and a better goalie than you've had in a long time. Not a terrible day overall.

thank you montreal!
now if we only traded you olie as for kovalev, we'd be set.

GO CAPS GO!

Thanks for Richards. I'm sad to lose Mike Smith. I think he will be a really good #1 goalie. He will be able to challenge Turco in puck moving ability. Go Stars.

it really sucks to see campbell go. he really wanted to stay. almost cried when they were talkin to him after the game. still support them though. go sabres! lets hope they dont let miller go next year and keep their dignity

I am glad we go Richards with all of the rumors going around I wasn't sure we were going to get him. You are getting a great goalie in return in Smith. I am going to miss him along with Jussi and Halpern. I think the Tampa system will be a better fit for Jussi and Halpern is a steady grinding player. I think you will really enjoy having Smith as your #1 keeper. Thanks for the site Chris keep up all the great work.

Mike Smith is a huge loss. He's better than Turco. I dont like losing him. I wish they could have done the trade without him. That would have been a deal breaker if I were GM.

On the one hand, the Bruins didn't do anything to really improve...but on the other, the unit is gelling now and I'm glad to see everyone stay. Continuity is something this team needs and I'm glad to see they'll have it.

Why you doesn't trade Richards to my Canucks. :'(:'(:'(

Anyone having to leave their team to play for Dallas is a black day on their career. i feel for you

Richards is 27! Enjoy Jussi Jokinen.

A very happy Stars fan.

As a Canadiens fan, I also can say that this day is AWFUL! It doesn't make any sense trading Huet for ... nothing! We now have to kids to keep our goal.

Honestly, it's for the best. Would you rather we have lost Boyle instead? Hell no, Boyle is the foundation of our entire breakout game. We can do without Richards. And now we have cap room to sign Vinny to an extension. Prospal was a UFA next season anyways would of asked for too much. On top of that, he always has on and off seasons so he would be shit next season at 4 million or whatever he will make. It might not look like it now, but Tampa did themselves a big favor today. I still shed tears at Richards leaving though, very sad :( PS you should join the Tampa Bay Lightning Fans United facebook group, if youre not already in there. Some very good discussions going on.

the bruins didn't do anything....

Hey, it's not like you were winning with them.

My team buffalo....well. We need not say anything

I think Buffalo actually made off with a good trade here.
Bernier may not be top flight talent, but he's got great size and has shown flashes of brilliance. He hasn't done it as much this season, but watch when he busts out a one-handed wrapper into the net. That was his money shot his first couple of seasons in SJ. Maybe he'll be more consistent in Buffalo and I hope he does well for the fans out there. At worst, Buffalo made out with a developing power forward and a 1st Rounder, whereas SJ might just be in the rental business.

That being said, I'm excited to have Campbell join SJ. He'll bring some sorely needed scoring power from the back end (or any end to be quite honest) for the Sharks. Entering with 43 points, that would make him the 2ND leading scorer on the team behind Thornton. Next leading Shark is Michalek with 42 points. Campbell and Rivet anchoring on the PP should be exciting.

I was expecting to get richards going into today. instead we get some underachieving winger for my beloved Matt Cooke.

He will be missed.

I too am disappointed in Dave Nonis. Seems like the Caps got the long end of the stick on this one. Good luck to the Cooker in Washington... I'm going to miss him a whole lot.

I really, really hope Campbell resigns with the Sharks, if he doesn't the Sabres will basically have stolen our 1st.

Richards will probably fit in nicely with the Stars.

Huet for a 2nd in 2009 is, as far as I'm concerned, the bonehead trade of the year.

Anonymous said...

Well i hope Prospal can help the flyers salvage this season, but i doubt it, he seems to only play well with certain teams. I do think that the Lightning got the better end of both deals, at least in the long run. Picard is a great Dman, i dont know why he wasnt playing this season in the first place, and Mike Smith is much better than any goalie TB has had since Khabibulin, plus you got Jokinen who is a great depth player who is fantastic in the shoot outs, and halpern is a hard player with alot of leadership. But i must say the rape of the day had to go to the Thrashers, how did they get all of those players? Armstrong, Christenes, Esposito and a 1st round pick for a rental? If they dont resign hossa and dont win the cup it could be the rape of the decade.

"Huet for a 2nd in 2009 is, as far as I'm concerned, the bonehead trade of the year."
I hate the habs, and its even better because they supposedly traded him to free up cap space for Hossa, that is hillarious since they didnt get him. Maybe Price will be a beast in the playoffs like Ward was that one time before he sucked.

Unknown said...

The habs did not trade Huet for cap room, he's a UFA at the end of the year, and they rather get something rather than nothing, since they had no interest in resigning him given they have the TOP 2 goaltender prospects. Though I think they should have made it well known, that way he might have gotten more like a 1st round pick for him or have been able to include him in a deal for someone like Hossa. Though to be honest Hossa is not the type of player the habs need. They need a strong power forward, someone like Vinny or Iggy but to get someone like that they would have to pay alot. I think they should have tried for Richards and given the deal Dallas gave they could have include Huet and maybe some prospects or draft places and gotten a great player that always burns them when he plays us. One good thing about the habs is that all the big names except hossa went out east so its not like everyone around them got much better.

Anonymous said...

The fact that his contract was up was a major part, but they are in first in their division, they would have liked to have a starting goalie for the playoffs, not a young rookie with no playoff experience. And if they were not planning on getting hossa im sure they would have gotten more than a second round pick for him, why didnt they get any other players? They needed the space, and the penguins gave atlanta the deal of a lifetime. If i were pittsburgh i wouldnt have given up that much, that was just a silly move on their part. But all of the reports i read basically had Hossa on the Habs roster, talk of them ordering gloves for him, TSN said he was in Montreal. I heard nothing of him going to Pittsburgh until the trade.

Anonymous said...

I forgot to add he was in montreal for the game, but they were saying something about him waiting for the trade to the canadiens

Unknown said...

Granted Hossa was in Montreal because Atlanta was playing them but I do not think Hossa is the player they need. His playoff record is not that great and if they can't resign him he's basically a rental. I don't think they should give up a lot for a rental. As for Price, everyone is saying he has no experience he has no experience. Well how much did Huet have? 6 games from two years ago? If Price is your future then I say put him in as the starter and let him get his feet wet. Yeah they might not go far this year or next year, but if as a team they keep gaining experience and they keep their young core, then in a few years they will be a good team with playoff experience. Plus how long should you keep a player coming up and down to the minors if you want him to be your guy? Yeah they did nothing to win the cup THIS year, but at least they did not give up stuff that will PREVENT them from winning in the future. People easily forget that Montreal is still really in rebuilding and will be for another couple of years as they build their young team and gain valuable experience.

I'm not unhappy with Huet trade cause everybody knows that we will had lose him anyways for nothing in the next year like we did with David Aebisher and we have 2 other good goalie in Price and Halak. It just too bad that we did not get anything more for him than 2 nd round pick !

YAY!!! Go Flyers!

I LOVE THE HUET TRADE! I am a Habs fan through and through and that trade was very smart on bob gaineys part. Huet was a UFA and he was going to end up losing him for nothing so he got a 2nd round pick for him. Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak can carry this team and the players up front are capable of getting it done.

If it makes you feel any better... I played a decent game in net last night.... Love, Dad. (a/k/a Mike Smith)
