The penguins wearing a scarf. Why? Because nothing says "NHL" like blood, fights, checks, and scarfs.
I like the penguin! I also liked the bug and the original coyote's and duck's logos! To me, NHL logos have always been a little bit... well... goofy. When the logo is "tough" or "cool" or modern it seems like the clubs are trying too hard. Hockey is an unassuming almost modest sport and I think logos like this penguin logo reflect that.
Once again, I'm inclined to give older logos a break. That Penguin was born in the 60s. Sure, he looks a little dumpy, and the scarf is an odd choice, but he beefed up pretty quick. This logo was used for ONE year. In the sixties.
The Lighting, on the other hand, have had nothing but bad, amateurish logos since their inception in 92. I do pity the graphic designer who had to create a logo featuring lighting, but this thing screams "clip art".
I think the context (when it was created, how long it was worn, etc.) need to be considered. Otherwise a lot of inexcusable modern logos will be let off the hook.
They both suck. End of discussion.
My vote went for the lightning though.
The Penguin looks era-appropriate and is much like other major-league logos of the time. The Lightning logo just looks like 7th tier minor league hockey stuff.
The background of the Penguins' logo really shouldn't be yellow. Their colors at the time were dark blue and pale blue - no gold/yellow at all.
But anyway... you have to cut the Pens some slack 'cause that logo never actually was worn on a jersey. Besides, that Lightning logo is just boring. The Penguin at least has some character.
the top of the tampa bay logo looks wrong i don't think there is supposed to be a top part of the circle.

Sorry, but the font on the Lightning logo is atrocious.
The Pens logo is probably the goofiest one in the league, but that makes it unique at least
don't think this particular penguins logo was ever used on an nhl jersey. anyway, for it's time it was a pretty good logo.
the lightning logo ,on the other hand, looks like it was designed by a grade school kid with an old etch a sketch.
Both are pretty bad, but my vote goes to the Lightning just because there's tons of potential with that name that just isn't realized. With the Penguins, the logo pretty much has to be a penguin. But the Lightning ... you could have a storm cloud shaped like a hockey player holding a lightning bolt shaped like a hockey stick. You could have "TB" formed out of lightning bolts. You could have a puck-shaped storm cloud shooting out a hockey stick-shaped lightning bolt. You could have any number of pretty cool concepts, but instead they have a piece of clipart with the city name AND the team name spelled out above and below it. That's just plain old lazy.
Also, as for the Penguins logo having the yellow background ... that's actually pretty significant. The "Golden Triangle" is another name for Pittsburgh's downtown area. So the fact that this logo has a golden triangle actually represents something about the city. The Lightning logo, meanwhile, just represents lazy logo making.
This one is a no brainer. The lightning logo is simply redundant and lazy. Then you have two different fonts, both equally atrocious and the fact that the designer didnt even complete the circle around the top. Simply one of the worst logos the NHL ever had. Tampa's new one isnt much better...
you call that a bolt?
Why is the old Lightning logo in this discussion? That was a solid logo. Now, if you want to put the current Tampa logo in this one, it would be a tough call. But for me, the penguin wins going away. Tampa had a good logo before making the downgrade.
Daneykoisgod... I know the yellow triangle IN THE LOGO is symbolic of the Golden Triangle of Pittsburgh. That's where I'm from, as a matter of fact. I was referring to the yellow background that Chris placed the logo on. Since there was no yellow in the uniform at that time (aside from the triangle in the logo), it seems like an odd choice for a background color.
My bad, Daniel.
The lightning logo looks minor league and, well, the team played that way for a long time. It is cheap, ugly, and pathetic.
The skating Pen is classic and was able to evolve into the nice modern logo. Tampa's new logo looks even worse than their old one.
I don't think either is terrible, but at least the Penguins tried. I admit it has to be tough to come up with something good and original when your team is called the Lightning, but this is so bland.
