Winter Classic Goes Retro

The NHL's official online shop suggests that the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins will be donning vintage sweaters for the Winter Classic which takes place on January 1, 2008. The photos listed can be seen below.

Those are nice jerseys. See Sabres fans? This is still your real logo, regardless of what your team wears every night. It makes it more special when they save it for occasions like this. Or maybe that's just me.

Don't know why everyone hates the new Sabres logo. I really like the new one. I thought it was going to win the tournament. I, Don't like the old one.

The BuffaSlug isn't as bad as everybody makes it out to be, but comparing it to the old-school logo is like comparing a Trabant to a Ferrari.

Buffalo's crest has a red dot where the eye is...did the original crest have that?

Yes, they've always had that red eye sandtrooper

Wow, the retro Penguins jersey is kind of cool.

I agree with tyklowak in that the new buffaslug is better than the old Sabres logo. That jersey makes me like it a lot more, though.

The orig BUF jersey is a classic. The team really should do the right thing and re-adopt that logo.

As for that blue Pens jersey, never liked it. The logo is okay, but the blue just isn't right. They fixed that by changing to their current colors way back when.

You slug-huggers are nuts. You like a legless, flacid, yellow phallic slugalo? Get your heads checked.

Glad to see we're going retro, even if it's for only one game. Here's hoping Mr. Quinn is paying attention. Though it's doubtful that much can be done even if he is. Reebok didn't design our retros, so there's next to no chance of them being readopted.

Will they be donning EDGES that night?

The Sabres classic jersey was leaked from a website called GreatSkate...they had it listed a couple weeks back and then took it down. But here was the info before it disappeared...

I did manage to speak to the company's customer service and they told me when I asked about the uniform for the game "Absolutely yes...white vintage."

And he replied when I asked about an official announcement from any organization and he replied "They haven't announced it yet but we definitely know about it...wanna get in your pre-order today?"

He also said that the jersey is made by RBK but is NOT in an RBK Edge cut uniform. It will simply be the same style cut as the previous uniforms from last year. According to them, there will be no NHL emblem on the neck. It is a replica jersey that they were selling as well, NOT the authentic.

Now I just need to get my tickets to the game. ;-)

that should be NOT listed as Edges

I'm surprised that they aren't in the Edge cut and don't have the new style collar! Glad, but surprised.

I must be the only person who pays attention to hockey who hates that original Sabres logo almost as much as a medieval peasant hates the Black Death. Ugly, awful, messy logo.
